Using geographic data
Geographic data is very similar to dataset rollup trees in that it allows you to explore hierarchical data. In this example we've chosen a Country field, and the software automatically aggregates the data to the continent and earth level.
Geographic data can also be visualized on charts like Geographic Maps.
Setting up geographic dataset fields
To set up a geographic dataset field, choose a Data Type of Geographic, and then a Geographic Type that matches the data you're tracking in that field. In this example we're setting up a Country field.
For continent and country fields, there's nothing else to choose. For everything else you'll need to provide additional data. For example, here we're setting up a State or Province field, and it requires us to also choose a country. You could choose to have all of the values in the same "Specific Value" of a country you choose, or you can reference another dataset field. We'll choose the Country field we just set up.
Here we've set up 5 geographic fields, allowing us to aggregate data from the County or Postal Code all of the way up to the entire world.
Matching text values
The software looks for specific text values to match against the built-in geographic rollup tree. If your data doesn't exactly match the values in the built-in geographic tree, you can modify your data by Transforming Values While Importing.
Currently the only data below the country level is for the US, which goes all of the way down to the county and postal code level.
